I say both, depending on the speed at which I am talking.

it bugs me when people say often :P I guess it shouldn't since everyone does but it just sorta does.

I know right.

My family used to make fun of me for pronouncing the "t," so I don't anymore.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I think it should be "often." Why else is is spelled that way?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Because English is stoopid like that. I think it depends on where you're from... maybe?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Well, I agree that English has many weird rules. It varies. I know people who say it both ways, and they all live where I live. It was probably pronounced "often" before, but to make it easier people started saying "offen." I think that's what happened to make "raspberry" turn to "razberry."
by Anonymous12 years ago
Ah. I didn't really know cuz I've never paid attention to how other people say it.
by Anonymous12 years ago
But there are some words, like subtle for example, that have letters that should be complete ignored (the 'b')
by Anonymous12 years ago
I guess that's true, but I haven't heard anyone pronounce subtle the way it's spelled. I've heard many people say "OFTen."
by Anonymous12 years ago
The same reason there's and "o" in "opossum," to confuse foreigners.
by Anonymous12 years ago
i HATE when people pronounce the t!
by Anonymous12 years ago
Why?
by Anonymous12 years ago
i was taught in school that "often" had a silent t, just like "listen." how much would it annoy you if people pronounced the t in listen? that's what it feels like to me.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I say both.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I thought this was an American vs. British thing.
by Anonymous12 years ago
People pronounce it "often"?
by Anonymous12 years ago
The high-brow English and 'luvvies' pronounce it "aaw-finn" ... how pretentious is THAT? Everyone KNOWS that it's mostly pronounced as offin!
