+617 Knowing what Harry Potter spells translate from Latin into makes them sound kind of cool. I mean, Expecto Patronum is "Await the protector" and Expelliarmus means "To thrust away the weapons of war." Sort of epic, amirite?

I seriously respect J.K. Rowling for putting so much research into the series.

No. I've taken Latin for 3 years now. Her grammar sucks. "Felix felicis" translates to "luck of luck" which makes no sense. "Expecto Patronum" means "I am waiting the patron." which also makes no sense.

Erm, "Patronus" can mean either 'patron' or 'protector'...and "Luck's luck" somewhat makes sense, if you think about it in the way of the luck that comes from drinking liquid luck.

fffft. I was on my iPod and I missed a word. Way to fail, me. "Expecto Patronum" means "I am waiting for the patron" or "I am expecting the patron." Anyway, I meant it doesn't make sense in the way they expect it to mean. I'm not going to argue this. I've had this general argument before and I obviously don't break through to anyone. You all look up to Harry Potter as god.

Yes, I worship at his very feet. Duude, I'm not arguing ;P Just pointing out that it can mean 'patron', but it can also mean 'protector.' I looked it up just to check. But yah, 'Luck's luck' might not make complete sense.

And the names are pretty great as well. Lupin: lupus or wolf Sirius: brightest star in the sky in the constellation Canis Major (big dog) Albus Dumbledore: white bumblebee Malfoy: bad faith Voldemort: flight of death Voldemort has to be my favorite.

ohh I thought Expelliarmus was taken from the words expel arms...lol

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It pretty much is xP Latin's really close to English, so expellere is to expel (thrust away) and arma means arms (weapons)
