Less than (<) three (3) makes a heart (<3) so OP is saying since the game requires 4 pieces, you can't get less then 3, meaning the game doesn't love you

I think you need to learn math. Any number less then three is still less then four. The only positive whole numbers less then three are 2 and 1. You need four pieces to win Connect Four. I understand technically it's four, but for the purpose of this post you can pull the stick out of your ass and acknowledge that saying less then three works too.
