+660 The interpretations English teachers come up with are probably things the author never even thought of, amirite?

My teacher last year had us analyze the deeper meaning and theme of "Fireflies" on a test, then after the test she told us that the Owl CIty specifically said it was just about fireflies, so she told us everyone got the question right.

^^ not the best example. Why would you analyze that? Your teacher must have been crazy XD plus what is there really in that song to analyze? It's straightforward. I'm trying to be an author however, and I'll let you know that I definately think of most (not all) implications of symbols and whatnot.

English is an interpretive class. The kid riding his bike down the street could either be a metaphor for change or just a kid riding down the street. Neither interpretation is wrong. That's the beauty of the subject.
