+376 We go to war for such silly reasons. If someone released 99 red balloons into the air, they would be mistaken for some type of weapon. Alarms would be raised, borders crossed, missiles fired, war machines deployed; fireworks everywhere. And for each balloon there would be a year of fighting, and no place for winners. All because of 99 innocuous red balloons. Crazy, amirite?

...Where did this come from?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm waiting to see who the first person to quote the source is. :) It's not a direct quote, by the way, it just alludes to something.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Goldfinger Thank god for google <3

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, they just did a terrible no good cover of it. The original song is by Nene, first released in German, then in English. Her version is so much better.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I keep misspelling it "Nene," it's actually Nena.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Heaps of people have done covers of it. It's a very popular/awesome song.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm not against covers at all -- in fact I love them -- but theirs sucked monkey vag.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Wait.... I'm sure I'm just really dumb, but I don't quite understand it. Is this about how governments panic over anything that could possibly mean a weapon which could possibly mean a war, so they go to war because of the possible war?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Exactly! Anyway I may as well just tell you that this was inspired by the song "99 red balloons" by Nene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14IRDDnEPR4 You very well may have heard it before; it was pretty popular. I pulled references from both the English and German lyrics.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Good post... how do people not know the song? I actually like all three versions, German, English, and Goldfinger. But the original German always sounds the best.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(Informed Guy): They might not recognize it by name, but I think most people have heard it. I like the English version because thatHs the one I grew up with, lol. Naturally the German version is the best, though. Interesting how they have slightly different lyrics.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Literally thinking about this 5 seconds ago. It's my ringtone.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Or the 99 red balloons could solve all worldly issues and transcend language barriers as everyone decides to just dance together instead of fighting.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ninety nine luft balloons...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The german version of this song... always the best :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

99 luftballons!!!!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Nena <3 love the german version

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i sang the german version at a karaoke party, totally confused everyone! one of my favorite songs :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

How did the first two commenters not know 99 Red Balloons?! *facepalm*

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i was as confused as you

by Anonymous 13 years ago

German 99balloons> English 99balloons>Gold Finger 99balloons. but all of the versions are awesome.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

plus the german version makes no reference to the balloons being red.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's called 99 luftballoons. "Luft" is "red" in German.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

well i don't speak german but i think rot is red and luft means air. so it says 99 air balloons that doesn't make much sense so they added red to fill the syllable gap. Just my guess, i don't know any of this for a fact.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh, you might be right. I just read in the video comments that "luft" is "red," and just assumed it to be right, even though it didn't seem right to me (being that German and English are so related, I expected the words for "red" to be more similar).

by Anonymous 13 years ago

lol yeah, just cuz it's on the internet.... luft IS air btw....luftwaffe = airforce. fufthansa = airline.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

THE INTERNET SAID IT, IT MUST BE TRUE. Then again, that means I can't trust your comment either, ohohoho! ;P No but seriously, do you speak German?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I love this song :) <3

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This song is so amazing.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ya sure. Except for the fact that letting that many ballons off into the air would result in them eventually popping and going into the oceans. Which in turn would kill marine life. Great.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You and me in a little toy shop buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got... :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i only got this because of an episode of scrubs... sad?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh wow, I never knew this song had some sort of deeper meaning. I only knew the reference because I used to play the techno version on DDR all the time.
