Actually, sailors used to put their elbows on the table to keep their plates from sliding around while they ate. I think.

Yeah, and in medieval times, it was polite to keep your elbows on the table so your dinner companions could see that you weren't holding weapons under the table or anything.

Or since it started as a British manners thing, it could've been a way to keep your posture straight. When you have elbows on the table, you're hunching forwards.
