It's annoying when you go to someones house and ring the doorbell but can't hear it, and you wonder if it's broken, or if they heard the bell and are coming. Either way you kind of awkwardly stand there not knowing whether to knock or do nothing, amirite?

It's not awkward because if they didn't hear it, then they won't be coming. If they heard it, then they're coming. Might as well wait for a while before trying again.
