Not 7th grade, in the show it was a year ago, so I think the summer before sophomore year. The books were 7th grade flashbacks.

Personally, I think Troian Bellasario looks too old to be playing a high schooler. While she's an excellent actress, they could have found someone more suitable for the role who actually looks sixteen.
