+51 If you're American (and you don't plan on moving to France when you're older) why the hell would you take French class instead of Spanish? There aren't hundreds of thousands of French immagrants coming here everyday. amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If you live in Louisiana, it's pretty helpful to know French

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ive never needed French. That's only in the deeep south. I know many more mexicansthan French people. Like x10

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not the whole south. pretty much just louisiana.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I didn't mean the whole south haha. South Louisiana*

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh okay makes more sense :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Forget x10, more like x100, at least.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Why does it matter? o_o

by Anonymous 13 years ago

So I plan on staying in America. This girl once told me I was stupid for taking spanish instead of french because most of the world speaks french. But I think its smart to take spanish if I plan on staying in America.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That girl was talking shit. (:

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thank you :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

English is the majority language for the record, not French.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Is she retarded? English is #1, Spanish is #2. French probably doesn't even make the top 10.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

because they like the language better than spanish they think it makes them sound sophisticated they want to be different take your pick

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because then you won't be totally lost if you ever visit a francophone country.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If you live in America you should speak English because that's what everyone speaks in America. If I moved to Spain I would learn Spanish and if I went to live in France I'd learn French; it's only fair that people coming into the U.S. should learn English.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What does this have to do with anything?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There's no difference between choosing to take French or Spanish in school as long as you know English

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What if immigrants are in the process of learning English? Or what if two immigrants are having a conversation about you?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You get paid more if you're bilingual.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

hate to break it to you bro, but the united states doesn't have an official language.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

thanks for breaking it ,man. The CIA agrees with you

by Anonymous 12 years ago

wut wary

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you go on the CIA's website you can see that Untited States of America doesn't have an official launguage but it shows you percentages of them and Haiwaiian is an official launguage but just for Hawaii

by Anonymous 12 years ago

ohhh okay lol

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because FUCK SPANISH

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Dear American, France isn't the only French speaking country Sincerely, Canadian

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Isn't it mostly only like in Quebec?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

A few of the western Provinces, but French speakers are legally treated just as well as English speakers throughout the entire country.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Quebec, anyone?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

haiti and some african countries anyone?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i live in the 'bilingual' city ottawa and i don't give a shiiit about french. After one semester of spanish, i know more spanish than french, which i have been forced to take for 10 years..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I used to live there... do they still make you do the whole "Histoires en action" thing?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i dont even know. I don't understand french at alll..never paid attention in frnech class.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Or English, apparently.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Does everyone have to be fucking grammar-nazis? OMG i spelled french wrong and used a sentence fragment! :O

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Histoire en action ? xD wtf

by Anonymous 13 years ago

maybe learning spanish doesn't seem interesting to them. in my opinion it doesn't matter. even after taking a few high school spanish classes it probably won't help in every day life, considering the fact you can't follow along to what theyre saying unless you're fluent cause they talk so freakin fast.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't see why its a requirement to get into college, its stupid and pointless! French was taken away because of budget cuts and I have to take Spanish even though I already know it!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

um i am half french so to be able to speak with my family in 2 launguages

by Anonymous 13 years ago

actually i found out some of my family only speaks french

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you're going to be a performer, french helps. (ballet, choral singing)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I would say learn Chinese if anything. Upcoming world powers should be a lot more of a concern to the youth of America other than solving todays problems.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Chinese is hard as hell to learn for people who speak a Latin-based language, but the most practical. Spanish is second.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Serenity/Firefly, anyone? No? Ah, well, it was worth a try.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i just wanted to be able to say "that guy smells like goat" in a mcdonalds or whatever in french, because if you say it in french, esp. in mcdonalds, pretty much no one will know what you're saying

by Anonymous 13 years ago

''Ce gars put la chèvre!'' ...no problem

by Anonymous 13 years ago

thank you! :DD

by Anonymous 13 years ago

it would be funny if they respond with ''Chienne.''

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not only that, but a lot of people who speak spanish don't speak English. The majority of the French have access to schools who teach English.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Most European schools require you to speak multiple languages by the time you're in middle school

by Anonymous 13 years ago

English being one of those languages, right?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes. English, Spanish and the native language

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's what I was saying. Many French schools (France is in Europe) teach English, and a lot of Spanish speaking countries (Like Mexico, which is below the U.S.) don't have access to schools that teach English. Is that not a true statement?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's actually not true. All schools in Mexico require you to learn english. The only problem is that school is extremely expensive in Mexico. Most can afford school, but feel it isn't necessary, hence the large working population and few small businesses

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ohhhhhh. Okay, I apologize for my misunderstanding.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Its fine. I blame the Mexican government. and Hitler.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

lol

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Spain is in Europe too

by Anonymous 12 years ago

True, but aren't there more countries that speak Spanish? I might be wrong. I'm honestly not completely sure.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

well there i latin america but some of them speak portuguse

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Blame Canada!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oy Gevalt, it's Canada's fault. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My school cut French. We only have Spanish now.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I knew I was never going to use either of them in real life, my favorite book was originally written in French, most of my family is from Quebec, and the class required zero effort. Not a hard choice. I'm in Chinese now, which (as the poster above pointed out) is way more useful, and really not that hard. Trust me, I tutor Chinese people in ESL, it is way harder for them to learn English than for us to learn Chinese.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

7 words. Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Keep in mind "here" is not acceptable when referring to your country on this website, or any web site really.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I said if youre American though, so it kind of applies to residents of America. So if i say "here" you would assume i meant America

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ahh, touchè

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because if you are living in this country you should speak english. I don't give a shit if they are talking about me in spanish I'll talk about them in german.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This is a ridiculous argument; You do not need to know Spanish of French to get by in the United States. However, if someone did choose to become bilingual, it's a personal choice. The reason Chinese is the most-spoken language is because the population in China is much larger that in the United States. (English is still the "international" language, so to speak). Anyhow, it doesn't matter whether you choses French or Spanish (in fact, you could learn both). Spanish will be very convenient in Latin America, while French will get you a long way in many European (and some African) countries.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I refused flat-put to take spanish. I was forced to take it during middle school and I hated it. I like German and I'm sticking with it. I /want/ to travel to Germany... Plus, I just love how it sounds :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I might go to France when I'm older, but the only reason I'm taking French is because I don't to take Spanish. And, yes, the Spanish-speaking POPULATION is bigger but more countries speak French. Also, I live in Michigan, which is close to Canada, who speaks French.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I had no idea Canada could talk.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yup, we have conversations all the time. :P

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What do immigrants have to do with anything? I'm fluent in French, I started learning it because I thought it was a gorgeous language. I couldn't really care less about communicating with "hundreds of thousands" of immigrants.
