If they end up taking care of it because the kid doesn't, or if they can't afford to keep it, and the kid doesn't pay. Or if it is constantly destroying things in their house... then they probably have the right to.

My parents want to give away my turtles just because. I take care of them completely. I spend 5 hours cleaning their 75 gallon tank every couple months and take the filter apart piece by piece to clean it. I pay for their food. I pay for their filters. I sit and watch them for two hours while they soak in sulfa dip when they're sick. I do. No one else in my family of 5 pays them any attention, and yet every time we're at a zoo or a national park or anywhere, they ask if they could use two more turtles.
