+225 There has been at least one time in your life when the world went absolutely crazy for something (e.g. a movie, video game, book, etc.) but when you experienced it for yourself, you honestly couldn't see what the big deal was, amirite?

Harry potter. I read the first book, and didn't enjoy it, and everyone told me I needed to read more than just the first book to get into it and I thought, surely not, if I liked the series then I wouldn't have to read the second or third book before I decided that.

No, it's true. Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets are kind of like stand alone adventures. It's not until the third one where it starts to weave together into an actual series. I had a friend that said the same thing you did, that sorcerer's stone wasn't enjoyable. I convinced her to read on and she came back and said I was right. I love the rest of the series and I myself am willing to say that sorcerer's stone was just "meh". Think of it this way. Were you completely successful at anything YOU'RE good at on your first try? Unless you're either not human or some sort of prodigy, chances are you had to take a few cracks at it before you started getting good. Likewise, J.K. Rowling required a couple books to get the books right. Whether or not it's worth it for you to read two books before it gets really good (although nobody's stopping you from using skipping to the third as an option) is, naturally, up to you.

My problem with that is that if the first book is only okay, why would anyone be inclined to read the next one?

Yeah this is exactly what I meant. If you read a book and don't like it, then you generally don't read the next ones in the series. Why should Harry Potter be the exception?

I'm not really a huge fan of Harry Potter either. I don't complain about it, but I don't really see why it's so good. "Chosen One kid goes to school for other kids with powers to defeat the Big Bad Guy" isn't exactly revolutionary. I read the first 4 books when I was younger and they were pretty good, so I bought the 5th when it came out and... it was incredibly dull. I managed to force my way through about 3/4 of it before giving up. It's fine if you like Harry Potter, but I don't get why it's so amazing. Old concept (albeit done well, credit where its due), plot holes that naturally come when there's a spell for everything... Ah well.
