+339 Being in band doesnt always make you a geek- and Band is much more than just Pep Band. We actually learn a lot of things that are very valuable, and use parts of our brain that other classes don't, therefore making us think more and harder about different types of things, which makes musicians smart, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not all musicians are smart. Not all kids in band are smart. Yes, it helps, but it isn't some magical thing that makes all kids smarter. I agree that band is amazing. I've been playing the flute for ten years. But during those years, I've seen my fair share of musicians that were complete morons.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yes, dumb band people like drummers? :]

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Horaay for flutes! But I agree, some are idiots, but usually the ones who continue to play and go as far as taking music in college tend to be smart and good thinkers

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree with the part that musicians are smart (for the most part), but being in band (almost always) does make you a geek.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Stfu bitch.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Excuse me, but you don't know me enough to call me a bitch.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well you should have said that they are geeks, because they are not.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I should have? Well, I did. If you're trying to say I shouldn't have... Then, I don't know what to say because that's what they are. I mean, don't get me wrong, I would never hang out with a band geek, I'm perfectly fine where I stand.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

God, People like you ruin this world. You're a loser. Bye.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You would never hang out with a band geek? Wow, doesn't someone sound like a superficial bitch.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No I wouldn't. And I might sound like a superficial bitch, but I'm actually not. My best friend from 8th-10th grade was a band geek, while I would only hang out with the jocks. She turned out to be a backstabbing, boyfriend-stealing, sack of shit. She ruined band geeks for me.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

So one bad band geek and now all of them must be horrible people? If you continue living life like that, you're eventually going to hate the world.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I guess so. But hey, you were bashing on me for thinking people in band were band geeks now you're calling them that? That's cute.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You're talking to two different people here, hun. hahaha

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Sorry if you're both anonymous and can't show you face... hun.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I was just pointing it out , no need to get all defensive.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I wasn't, I just said you're both anonymous so there's no way I can tell how many people I'm talking to. Sorry if it seemed defensive or rude.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You don't know us enough to call us geeks.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

well by my band teachers logic if you actually enjoy band then it wouldn't bother not like you are a choir queer. Chir doesn't suck but being called gay versus smart.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

excuse me, but i dont think you know us enough to call us nerds.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I never called you nerds, I called you geeks.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

jeez im sorry.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm just saying.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Just adding my two cents, people in band tend to be pretty nerdy. Not saying that that's what makes them nerdy, but just most of my school's band members aren't the coolest people in the world...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(Differnt Anon): actually my school supports the band in a spiritual way not like funding because if you can take ''tin can ran over by semi-trucks'' and play it correctly you are something.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Actually no,that's a stereotype, being in band most certainly does not make you a geek,it's the exact opposite at my school.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

So basically what you're saying is that band kids aren't just geeks, they're nerds too.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Go band:)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I also bought some amazing chocolate that the band people were selling, so therefore that also makes them traders of delicious confectioneries as well. :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There's this one stupid kid in my band who head bangs and pretends to hold a candle in the air depending on the tempo, and then starts laughing because he thinks he's funny. He's not. Other than that, most of the kids in band at my school are smart. & flutes are the best.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

* Clarinet :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

**Trumpet :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

***Percussion

by Anonymous 13 years ago

****saxophones[i don't play but they are cool and my friend plays it.I play flute]

by Anonymous 13 years ago

YEAAHHH trumpets!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There's different types of intelligence. Remember that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

geeks arent the opposite of smart

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you're only trying to rationalize being a band geek. if you're in band, you're a band geek. end of story. the difference is, you can either be proud of it, or do this and try to make it seem like you're not a band geek.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i know right

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Music makes you better at math :) they've done tests and such that support the idea of people doing music (things like reading sheet music and composing) generally are better at math :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My best friend's a band geek. She's not the best student, but I would agree that she is a better thinker than most people I know. And Band Geeks FTW!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Music helps build connections between the two hemispheres of your brain making your more intelligent than you would of been otherwise. So take all those band people who you consider morons or similar and imagine them if they hadn't taken band?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

plus it adds muscle to your lungs but that is just another benefit

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Me and my friends call each other band geeks all the time (tenor and alto sax ftw, by the way). It's like a compliment. But if it's someone I don't know or someone saying it in a mean way, SHIT WILL GO DOWN.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Saxophones rule.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

alto sax ftw :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Alto for life baby.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Especially marching band, you have to focus on so many things. Traversing, making sure you're marching correctly, making sure you're counting the music AND the steps you're taking at the same time, your chin must be up, you must be playing the right notes, remember where you're going, remember to make sure you're in the right spacing, make sure your steps are on the beat of the song...and there's more.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thank you for saying that!! Marching band is easy-moderately physically demanding but when it comes to the mental part...it's like a kid with ADD's heaven. There's SO much going on and I hate hearing non-band people say it's easy. It takes a marcher to know the balls it takes. ps. go flutes.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

We all know that jazz musicians are among the sexiest people around.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This is true :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Absolutely. I mean, they call it "sexophone" for a reason.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

well where did you think ''can i have your 'phone number'' came from

by Anonymous 13 years ago

GO FLUTES!! I gotta agree, if you are joking with your other band friends, it's okay to call yourselves geeks but its like non band people using it negatively and shit's going to happen.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It has come to my attention that trombones have not been mentioned in the comments, and I must say that in the whole of the entire universe...TROMBONES RULE OVER ALL!!!!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

tl;dr

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ok yay you can play an instrument. Now go squat 350x10.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Now go sight-read a 10 minute piece of music.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I can play and instrument and start varsity. Go march 3 miles while your shoes melt into the pavement. True story.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(*shrugs*): My awesome director used to say that we were all starters in marching band and there is only varsity, no freshman or JV band.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Too long, did not read.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It depends completely at what school you go to. My high school is much more football oriented even though we have a very skilled band (which won a lot of state awards in competitions). Rather than make band seem cooler as you may expect, it just barely registered on our monthly newsletter a few times. Our band is definitely a little isolated, clique-wise, and frankly, has a reputation for attracting 'geekiness'. Now it's validity is all in the eye of the beholder, so each person thinks of band a little differently.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Too bad the morons that goof around and can barely play a scale ruin band :

by Anonymous 13 years ago

for those of you who demean us band geeks, screw you! We may not be the most popular but we do just as much work to be good at what we do and we don't look down on others just because we think we're more important. Band "geeks" turn out to be some of the more interesting and better people because we aren't robots popped out of one machine. Maybe we aren't the strongest, but how long is the shelf life of an athlete...we have music everywhere and we will always have music...how long will sports make you happy? whatever you want to do with your life is fine i have friends who are jocks and i respect them but only if they respect the things that i do.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm 100% band geek and proud of it. My friends and I take it as a compliment. The "cool" people think they're somehow better than us (at least at my school) but they just don't realize how much fun we have. EUPHONIUMS KICK BUTT. Clarinets too.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Actually, a lot of the popular people in my school are in band. And band at my school is crazy fun, I love it :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No one in my band is offended by "band geek". Marching band is awesome!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm a band geek ! And proud ! Every band member calls each other band geeks. It's all in good fun. At my school people don't really care. My best friends are cheerleaders. Oh, and Clarinets FTW :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

well atleast you know when to cheer at the games

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I love band. :) We have have lots of different types of people in our band. Many are smart, some are complete idiots I wish would quit. But we all make it work. Flutes are the smartest and overall best section! :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree, in my band there are some tradition geeks, but alot of us are in student government (which means your popular/smart/fun), do sports and are GOOD at them, and excell in classes. Even the football team things that the reason we win so much on our home field is becasue "is the band" :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i love how a lot of the comments have some where in them something about an instrument. I remember when people argue over brass or woodwind but it is cool so i guess now i have to put something so i guess woodwinds are awesome

by Anonymous 13 years ago
