That name was coined because in 1979 Dallas, TX was the only city that had the capability to do a live national broadcast. It broadcasted the Dallas/Cardinals game. As a result Dallas had "more" fans than any other team because of viewership. It certainly is rediculous, I know, and wouldn't fly by today's standards.

i mean, if anything, shouldn't the patriots be america's team? don't get me wrong, i hate the patriots, almost as much as the steelers, but i always wondered why a team so hated as the cowboys is called america's team.
