+184 It's annoying when people say 'British accent' when they mean an English accent, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's so annoying! They say it in American films and tv programmes, you're like..no its ENGLISH!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Loving how this comes from 'The people of the UK'. It really does.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Especially if they're listing different accents and say something like "British accent, Scottish accent, Welsh accent..."

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well you can speak english without sounding like that and since most people who sound like that are from britain it makes sense...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well then don't call my accent an "American accent". I prefer "New York accent".

by Anonymous 13 years ago

New York isn't a country. Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales are.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(Mb) Why does that matter? New Yorkers have a different accent from other Americans the same way as English people have a different accent as other British people. The fact that one is a country and one is a state is really irrelevant to the argument.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah, it's kind of annoying. And I'm not even British. But if people said "American accent", we wouldn't get annoyed, even though there's a huge difference between a New Jersey accent and a Texas accent.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah, I get what you're saying but it is just what's common. Technically Canada and Mexico and all of South America would be considered American. But, come on, everyone knows that you mean a United States Accent. When someone says British Accent, everyone just assumes England. We know you're all apart of the British Isles, but it doesn't really matter. Technically it's not PC, but everyone understands it. Why does it matter?

right on(sorry hippie moment)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

only when you're british

and its annoying when brits say american accent instead of u.s.a. accent. okay, its not really annoying. i dont know any aemrican who gets annoyed. so i dont see why you complain. its not too big of a deal.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

it is SO annoying! some of the defensive arguments put up by the dumb americans in this thread just sum them up basically.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I love the defensive arguments tbh. I'm ENGLISH and have an ENGLISH accent, and it actually is pretty annoying when people call it a British accent. And there is a pretty big different between different states and different countries; that's like saying a Middle-Eastern accent or a Soviet accent or something. Different regional dialects (e.g. Cockney, Geordie - or Brooklyn, Texas, etc) are different from English, Scottish, Welsh, etc. Also speaking English doesn't automatically give you an English accent, just FYI. English accent comes from the country of England, not the language. And when I say 'American accent' I would of course mean the United States of America, not the entire North America or South America (which are split into DIFFERENT accents) ... aaand I'm running out of characters to write with soooo I'm done :)
