+117 When are we ever really going to use algebra in our daily lives unless we have a job that requires it? "So, do you want anything from the store for dinner? Hold on let me solve for x and I'll get back to ya'." Amirite?

"Hey honey, are you going to go mow the lawn?" "Not yet, I need to solve for x first before I do anything else." Because THAT'S how life is. ;/

Happens all the time!

EVERY day.

engineering... college... accounting... that's it.

Hence why I said "unless you have a job that requires it".

tee-hee...

No, that's not it. Physics, chemistry, business, and computer science are some other popular careers that require math. http://weusemath.org/careers For more, click the link.

You are correct. This was posted so long ago, stupid high school me. Bleagh!

Idk if in right or wrong but I'd think it's for us to influence what career we want. Specialize in math? Maybe an engineer! Sorta to choose our path.

Primary and secondary school are not trade schools. What you learn isn't supposed to help you in the real world. It's meant to help make you into a more sophisticated and well rounded person.

I have used algebra outside of school/work and I felt like a total badass.

Agreeing with what other people have said, but algebra and math in general also helps develop your problem solving skills and number manipulation skills that can be used in a variety of fields. Sure, in manual labor it's not going to help much, but you don't need to go to school to learn how to be a manual laborer

Ok honesty, basic algebra is so common in so many fields, whether you realize it or not. If you can't solve a basic "solve for x" problem, then you most likely are going to have trouble finding a job. Of course not everybody will need advanced calculus, but things like algebra are necessary.

You need to learn in in order to teach your spawns, who will also need to learn it...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Perhaps that's the case, but the majority of high-paying careers require mathematics. Also, neither history nor science is used in our daily lives, yet it's still important to learn those.

algebra? not at all. however, y = log2(x/4)^-5/3 would require more than rocket science. if anyone has an answer, you would explode.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not trying to say that you won't ever need to use algebra or any other various math skills; it was just meant as a joke.
