They are sizing each other up and trying to intimidate each other to scare the other away. Its actually an instinctual reaction. Animals do the same thing in the wild.

I misread that as flights and I was imagining them on a plane, like 'noooo...that doesn't happen?'

Most fights are won before the first punch, if you can come across as confident and intimidating you have already thrown a big hit. Being in someones personal space is intimidating and showing you are not scared of them, the person(s) will puff out their chest and arms and then start pushing or nudging to show they are not scared to make contact and to show they can move you around. It is body language at its easiest to read.
