In order to do something entirely out of the goodness of your heart, you must first not have goodness in your heart. People with goodness in their heart feel good helping people, thus do it in part for the good feeling. Only people with no goodness in their heart get no good feeling, and they also do not do stuff, because of their lack of goodness. Therefore, altruism and kindness are mutually exclusive. Except in Jesus, but he wasn't really human.

I've tried to explain this to people, but they just don't understand.

We were just having a discussion about this is English class. Our teacher was all like, "I think everyone does everything they do for a selfish motivation, so technically you can argue that no one does anything completely for others without expecting something in return." Whatever. That's too deep for me. wary

There was an episode in Friends like this. Phoebe wanted to do a completely good deed, so she ended up giving a donation to something she doesn't support, because then she wouldn't feel happy about it.
