+436 "I'm half Irish half English half Russian half German half Scandinavian half Scottish half Belgian and half Polish." Just because your great-great-great grandma was one of those doesn't mean you are, just say you're American or Canadian, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I understand people who are proud of their heritage, but once it surpasses one or two different nationalities, then it gets a little bothersome.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's how it is with me, when someone asks i just say 60% English and 25% chinese, and then say the rest is just small amounts of random european countries.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I just tell people that I'm German, English, and Danish. My family's only been in the US for 2 or 3 generations. My grandparents still have VERY thick German accents.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i say im 20% irish and the rest is english, whales, scottish and all those other unimportant countries

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Whales? Do you mean Wales?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I have over five and I'm proud of it, I'm a mixed-breed!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've never heard anyone say they were half of more than 2 things. And maybe we like to say we're all these different nationalities because everyone hates America and generalizes that we're all fat idiots.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I disagree. I love knowing where my family came from. I'm a proud german/French/Irish/English person :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm proud of my four nationalities, Irish, Scottish, Greek, and Ukrainian. It's all of those things that make me who I am today. Blood shapes a lot of things in a person, from genetics to their personality (that is, the household in which they were raised based on old family traditions). And every year both sides of my family have a day (separately) in which we remember our heritage with foods, games, dances, and music from those countries. I enjoy art (painting and drawing) and like to incorporate my heritage into my pieces. There's nothing wrong with being proud of your nationality, yes, I live in America, and I'm an American, but it's not my background heritage per se. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If you're just gonna put it that way. All African-Americans are part African. So, your ancestors may be FROM those places but that doesn't mean that you are. Because if someones black, their ancestors could be all white, and they have a child with a black man, and that child has a child with a white man. Is it black or white? How much black, how much white? So it's pretty hard to tell that you're all that stuff, with those countries all separate.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, I never said I was from those countries, I'm from America, all I said was that all those countries were my family's background and our heritage. Why shouldn't I take an interest in my family's line? All I'm saying is if your biological mother or grandmother is irish, then you're part irish. Yes, I'm an American, and I'm an American citizen, but it's my family's genetics that determine my physical appearance, and the traditions with which I was raised which play a lot in my personality. For example, my Greek grandmother and Greek mother are frantic and can't let arguments go (old Mediterranean stereotype), and, being raised by them, I, too, am hectic and annoying when it comes to arguments. ;) That goes with traditions, etc. And if all their ancestors are white, genetics dictate that they will be white. But I understand what you meant. haha But it's true that they are still part African American, because it's in their blood. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Also, where a family is from plays a big part in genetics. I'm irish, and it shows in my freckled skin which sunburns easily, Ukrainian, because of my curly hair (we just assume I got it from my Ukrainian grandfather, because our hair is the "most" similar), my round face I get from the Greek side, and Scottish because I play golf... hahaha No, I'm totally kidding about that last part. But I have green eyes, which come from my Scottish side (well, scottish or irish, everyone on my dad's side has green eyes, and he's both). I totally understand where you're coming from, they shouldn't say they're from Africa if they lived in America their entire life, they should say they are descendants of Africans or it's their heritage. But yes, all African-Americans are part African. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What makes America so awesome is that we take the best of every country. That's the point. I'm proud to be Japanese/Filipino/Hawaiian/English/French/German/Irish/Spanish

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Damn Americans stealing everyone stuff.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

When they're really similar nationalities yes it gets bothersome. Like, my mom's side is Dutch/Swiss, so to shorten it I just say I'm German. But my dad's side is Spanish/Russian, and those are really different so I can't really shorten that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

im irish hungarian german polish swedish scottish and a few other things and i mention all of them to me its important

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm English, Danish, and Italian. I think it's important to know your roots. I mean, that's where your family is from. It's all different cultures and customs. It's cool to know where your ancestors were from and what they did.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That adds up to four people. Don't worry, I'm four people too.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm New Zealander, and I've been that way for about 5 generations. Anything more than that is just stupid to count that as part of who you are because it would only be a tiny percentage.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm Slovak, and my parents speak with a heavy accent. So I'm basically the first generation in my family to be part American But I see what you're saying. I REALLY hate it when people say they're like 100 different nationalities, yet they don't know anything about the country(s), they can't speak the languages, and it was probably their great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents who came from the country(s) in the first place.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Is American even a race? I though it was just a nationality because we're all really from other places, and I disagree. It's the people who say "IDK what my heritige is i'm just white" who are annoying. Ancestry is a thing to be proud of.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i'm not even american i'm canadian and i'm half dutch half italian because my parents are but i dont go around saying ten thousand other places where my great great great great ancestors could be from it's okay to say the 2 of your parents but after that it gets annoying and unnecessary

by Anonymous 13 years ago

YOUR MATH IS INCORRECT, I SAY! INCORRECT!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I actually am half German thank you very much

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm Irish..... no thats it. 100% Irish. <3 from Ireland.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well if your great-grandma was one of those things then you ARE too, it's just genetics, heritage. If she's your biological great-grandmother then yes, it's in your blood. But I wouldn't go around saying you're like four sets of halves

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ok, you are confuing nationality with ethnicity. Nationality is which country you are a citizen of. Ethnicity is about your genetics.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

...but I have no Canadian or American in me. I'm just 50 % Aussie 50% Italian.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

in the end your all African! From Ethiopia!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

that is probably true haha

by Anonymous 13 years ago

So you're four Americans? Okay, sure.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well when in America if someone asks you "what are you?" theyre referring to your ethnicity and if you answered "American" they would most likely look at you crazy.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Do I HAVE to say AMERICAN or CANADIAN? Discriminatory... 100% Australian, Thankyou.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

sorry i love aussies your accents make me die of happiness

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm half Australian, half English, half Romanian, half African. No wait, I'm Indian. :D I lied.

by Anonymous 13 years ago
