Or choir

You know the people who major in acedemics are going to be the ones who get the athletes money when they go pro...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not necessarily. You can letter academically with a 3.25 GPA. I'm not saying this is a bad GPA, but it's really not very good either. Pretty average. A varsity sport on the other hand...that's very hard to achieve. I've lettered academically, but I'm not as proud of that letter as my sport letter....I feel like I worked hard for both but it's sort of unnecessary to have one for grades.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Eh, that's true. I think grades should stick to trophies and such...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

At my school we had to have a 3.85 to letter.

You have to put forth a good amount of effort to letter in academics and music. Why shouldn't those people be able to letter the same as the sports players do?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

not to be a total n00b or anything, but what is a letter jacket?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Basically a jacket you get and you receive badges (sometimes a large letter) for all your achievements. Mostly it's for sports.

It's stupid when people think they're so high and mighty because they can run around with a piece of cow hide. amirite?

Marching band is hardcore shit, bro.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No. Just... no.

Oh really? One of the songs we play is Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas. Not only are all of the forms complicated as hell, it's also extremely fast. We basically march in any given direction (all while facing one way, and don't forget that our steps are specifically formed) trying to stay in step to this ridiculously fast song. In parts, we're basically sprinting all while playing a song filled with 16th notes (take one note and divide it into 16, if you're musically incompetent.)

I lettered in marching band and JROTC, and I had to work my ass off for those letters.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My school doesn't have academic lettering. It's band, jrotc, or sports. Its blood, sweat, and tears either way you choose.

I have 4 letters, all for being on the Varsity tennis team for 4 years in a row. I am absolutely horrible at tennis and don't much like playing it, but needed something to do in the fall. There were no cuts on the team. I also have an academic letter, which I worked my ass off for and am proud of. So no, it's not "stupid" at all. (also, the irony of the fact that you called it "stupid" that people get academic letters for being smart.)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

At my school, you have to be on varsity to letter. And being on varsity alone doesn't even guaruntee a letter. You also have to meet other credentials.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

At my school, it just takes being on Varsity. and my tennis team was all considered "Varsity", all 23 of us. I was 17th on the team, and even #23 got a letter.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah it's bull shit!!! Letterman jackets should be for sports alone. They should have a totally different jacket for academics or band.. If it's harder for you to get a letter in academics than in sports then your school plain out sucks hahaha

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Obviously you have never done well in anything besides sports because if you had you would have realized the amount of time and commitment it takes to be in AP or Dual Credit college classes along with other activities. Sports is not going to get you anywhere in life like academics will, so I think you need a reality check. Quit being stupid as hell.

I would to see you, reeree, to play a trombone in the correct pitch, time, and formation.

A letter on a jacket is a sign of achievement and success. It should be earned through dedication and hardwork. Who's to say the band, journalism department, choir, and all other organizations don't work as hard as sports players? I'm in my school's journalism department and I've broughten more awards, more money, and spent more hours working hard than our football players, so why don't I deserve a patch that I can wear to show my pride in what I've done? My school gives letters for drama, band, and choir, but not journalism. We have talked to our principal NUMEROUS times and nothing has happened because journalism is not a state sponsored event.

Imagine not being in a state like Colorado and not getting a letter for being recognized by the state which in Colorado is pretty close to being a national thing

I'm not saying that playing and instrument is easy, I have lots of friends in the marching band and I see how hard they work and I play an instrument but it annoys me because letters and varsity jackets are ment for sports not academics.

Okay here's the thing. I was in basketball my freshmen year. During my sophomore year I got my choir letter and color guard letter. At first I thought the choir letter was lame. When I got these I felt a huge accomplishment. Many people have a hard time getting one letter and I got 2. For some people they love what they do and if they do then isn't that all that matters. Honestly I hated choir I never liked it and I still kinda don't but getting a letter for it made me realize that it's pretty great. For some people all they have going for them is what they are in. They shouldn't have to be scared to express how they feel about an activity or sport. Some people cannot sing let alone even hold a flag. That may have sounded harsh and that's how it is. I will be completely honest I cannot do half the sports in my high school, and when I finally find where I belong I don't wanna be judged. Correct me if I'm wrong please but sports should be something you love to do and no matter what as long as you're having fun isn't that what matters? Just let people like what they want and they will do the same for you

It is just as time consuming and requires just as much if not more commitment, dedication and hard work to be a successful academic as is does to be a successful athlete. Any burly guy with a hard head can put on a helmet and knock someone down, does that take talent, no just genetics. Intelegence and success in academics is something above and beyond the physical.

wow imagine being so triggered by what other ppl wear. it’s high school. a jacket. None of it will matter in five years. Let other people take pride in their accomplishments. It’s really not a big deal.
