+336 You wonder why it's called the Phillipines, but the country's people are called Filipinos. I mean, why not just call them Phillipinos, it's pronounced the same, amirite?

I think it might be because in the language, we don't use Ph as an f sound. And it was named by the Spanish after the king's son, Philip. To integrate it into the language, the Ph was changed to F. I could be wrong but that's my theory.

Serene's correct. :) & OP, "the Philippines" is spelt with just one L.
