$19.99 seems like less than $20, amirite?

I think I've said this before - since in the West we read from left to right, we read the "19" being the important thing. Even though you KNOW that 19.99 and 20 are the same thing, you're brain still puts 19.00 to 19.99 into the "19" category.

I read both from left to right and right to left but 19.99 and 20 are the same to me. I think of how much I need to pay, which is a $20 bill.

Yeah, you know that 19.99 and 20 are the same, but a tiny part in the human subconscious reads the first few numbers first - that's one of the reasons why stores would dock a cent off to put the price into a different number range in the first place.

it actually seems like more to me, I think because commercials don't just say "19.99" anymore. they say "three easy payments of 19.99"

19.99 also seems like more to me because I think of the tax I'll have to pay as well, which is like 20.96... or something... But when somebody says "20 bucks", they usually don't ask for the tax.
