-162 Cussing is just a way of fitting in, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

We discussed this in my world cultures class. Bby cussing, people create a sense of trust with others.

I disagree, I don't stain my lips with cursing and I fit in fine. I don't know if people even really notice if some people never swear

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Do you disagree with me, or the original post? Because your comment sounds like something that applies more to the post itself than my opinion.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, it somewhat applies to both. The first part applies to OP, the second part applies to what you said.

May I ask how cussing creates a sense of trust with others? There's obviously some psychology behind it. What about when you curse alone? If I stub my toe on a wall I actually say fuck you to the wall. Clearly I'm not trying to create a sense of trust with the wall or my other furnishings.

Well, from what I remember from the class I took a year ago, imagine if a teacher swore in front of you. Most people think, "Wow! Teachers aren't supposed to swear in front of their students! Maybe he thinks of me as more of a student/subordinate, but as a friend/equal!" Because swearing is so taboo, we only do it with people we're comfortable with.

That's just correlation without causation. We swear with people we know, but we don't swear to know people better. We swear when we //already// fit in, not so we //can// fit in.

Well, a strategical person might swear in front of people to make people think that they trust them and thereby fit in. Although that's probably more manipulation than strategy. Also, that's only one argument for how cussing helps you fit in. If you're meeting a group of people who all swear with each other, if you don't swear you'll stand out, so you'd swear to conform.

Why do people cuss

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah that makes sense. Im sure if I grew up in a household where people cursed I would catch on.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's really unattractive to me when people cuss. Shows that they have no self control or just think its cool.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think when people curse, most of the time it's just out of habit.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's been proven that swearing is a way to reduce pain.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I cuss when I'm angry/upset or sometimes if it just fits with what I'm saying. I don't get what the big deal is, they're just words.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It can be, when it's in casual conversation. I think that when someone's angry, they cuss not to fit in but to lessen their anger

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Cussing is fucking awesome. It really lightens up the mood y'know? Besides who the hell decided that certain sounds produced from our mouths were offensive? They're just syllables.

I don't know why I swear, I just do. It annoys me when some people think that anyone who swears does it to be 'cool' or make themselves look 'big'. No - just no. Maybe that would apply to a young child, say an eight year old, but not teenagers, adults or in fact, anyone else. Anyway, I don't see why people have such a problem with swearing.
