+187 Considering how different American English is compared to English English, we should change the official language to "American", amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The only problem with this is that the US doesn't have an official language. English is only the de facto language, but the government has never declared it as the 'official' language.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Which is actually a bad thing... Also, the languages aren't that different. Though give it another hundred years and they might.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Why is it a bad thing?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Eh, personally I think it's a bad thing. I have my reasons, but they aren't very strong. Mainly because we will lose the ties that bond every American, the ability to communicate with your neighbor.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

because it means we have to have 30 friggin languages on every bit of instructions for a hair dryer or a candy bar, instead of just plain english.

It's actually British English, and that would be idiotic. I mean red apples and green apples are different, but it doesn't make them any less of apples.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

true but green apples are sour and taste better

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That opinion is exactly as saying "American English is more fun to speak and sounds clearer", which many people actually think. You're just adding on to my analogy.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

wait I said English and British in that comment? I wasnt aware of that thanks bro (it was a joke btw)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It was a bad joke btw, because sarcasm doesn't work when you don't understand what you're using it against.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

actually the sarcasm was NOT a joke the apple comment was, sucks doesn't it?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oic, then apples comment was the bad joke then, eh? Good jokes needn't be signified as jokes.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

or they need to be explained to people with under developed comprehension

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But chances are greater that the joke just plain sucked.

In Illinois, the official language IS American,

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Haha yup! We only speak American round here! None of that English stuff.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeahh Illinois!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's just stupid. Minor differences do not make it a different language.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I didn't realize that the United States had an official language.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

So since people in the south use "y'all" as a word we should have our own language? So this would also apply to countries in Africa who speak French, but since it is a little different they should have it as there own language. Amazing logic.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Actually they are in fact 2 separate branches of English, the American dictionary was started by David Webster in the 19th century

by Anonymous 13 years ago

but it is still english

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's only a matter of different dialect. Don't treat it as different languages completely.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Mexican Spanish and Spain spanish are a little bit different, but they're not two different languages.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's pretty much spelling that's different. I mean I'm American and British people would be able to/ can understand me right now.
