When you pick up the phone you always say " Hello? " not " Hi? ", amirite?

That seems really awkward to say. It's too short.

what I use as my greeting depends on what my caller id says. bf will get a 'hey babe', boss a clear 'hello, how may i help you mr./mrs. ____', parents a friendly 'heyyyy!'. unavailable always gets a simple hello though

Because it's not just a greeting, but from the Hungarian "hallom" which means "I hear you" and was use when inventing the first telephones. It's a form of "allo" in every language, just those two syllables, it just happens to sound like the greeting word "hello" in English.
