+117 Texting shouldn't cost. amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh no because it costs absolutely nothing to put a satellite into space and keep it well maintained.

Texting doesn't use a satellite. A phone, when it has service, keeps a constant connection with the cell towers. It keeps the communication by sending packets of information, which can only hold ~200 characters. So texting is essentially free for the cell company since the phone has to keep a connection going.

It doesn't matter if it's free for the company or not. They're providing a useful service and they have a right to charge for it.

They do have a right to charge for it, but it shouldn't be as expensive as it is for something so cheap to them. It's kind of like diamonds; they have an extremely high markup and have no right to cost that much.

Because those cell towers were completely free, amirite? Seriously, you don't seem aware of how companies work.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's most people's main form of communication these days. If carriers don't charge for that, they're hardly going to make a profit.

Have you seen the price for data plans?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not saying they're fairly priced. I'm just saying texting should cost.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

$20 a month is a bit of a markup on something that literally costs a fraction of a cent. if you're paying over $30 a month, texting should be free i'd say a fair price for standalone texting would be $10.

This is the stupidest post I've seen in a while. And it has a positive score... :|

Mine doesn't cost anything. Unlimited free texts for the win! It's technically a business plan, but hey.

On our plan, we have unlimited calls to other verizon phones, and unlimited to the bordering states AND other phones on weekends. Then unlimited texting to anything anytime. For 5 phones (2 with data plans) it's $300 a month. Asdfghjkl
