+376 Is there any real response when someone says "I'm sorry" to you at a funeral? why are they apologizing? It isn't like they killed the person.. hopefully.. amirite?

Perhaps they mean 'I am filled with sorrow.' "I'm sorry"--> "I'm sorrow-y" --> "I'm sad about this :(" A real response for this, though... 'Thanks for your compassion.' Maybe? I am not a linguist, so this is just what I make of it.

They mean they're sorry for you like they feel for you, they aren't apologizing.

But still, what do you say?

I guess you say thanks?

Thank you.

I usually just mumble incoherently and let them interpret what I said in however way they want.

"I'm sorry." "Why? It's not your fault." "I know what I did."
