If cheerleading is a sport, then by golly, so is Marching Band! Amirite?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Voting up just for "then by golly".
by Anonymous12 years ago
That's the reason why I voted it down.

Cheer leading is more dangerous. You could break your neck from that height O____o
by Anonymous12 years ago
i'm not in marching band but i bet it can get pretty dangerous too...what if you get hit with a trombone?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Or a sousa.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Someone on the colorguard whacked me on the shoulder. And for field show I have to avoid being trampled by a sousaphone.
And yeah I agree with the people down below that just competitive cheer is a sport haha
Yeah.
by Anonymous12 years ago
You can break your neck from less than 1 foot off the ground. It isn't that hard.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Cheerleading CAN be a sport.
by Anonymous12 years ago
For me, competitive cheer leading = sport, spirit cheer leading = activity.
Simple
by Anonymous12 years ago
Competitive cheer leading is NOT a sport.
HASN'T BREAKFASTFAN OPENED YOUR EYES YET!?!?!?
Seriously, how many fucking times do we have to go over this shit, bitch ass hoe fucker ass shit bitch.

Okay, that makes sense. I think it's just insulting to (competitive) cheer leaders when you say it's not a sport, because you are implying that it's not as physically demanding as other sports, which it is.
So, it may not be a "sport" because of how it's scored, but they are still athletes.
Can we agree on this?
by Anonymous12 years ago
I never said it wasn't physically demanding though. When I talk in real life about this stuff, I acknowledge that it's hard, but explain everything else too.
by Anonymous12 years ago
THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL. Pure Poetry.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Playing an instrument isn't a sport, you might as well say that being in band is a sport, then.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I think it is the marching part they were probably talking about.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Like brunetterox915 said, marching around a field playing an instrument isn't a sport. Hell, people in rock bands and junk jump and run around the stage and that's definitely not considered a sport.
I see marching band as an activity.
by Anonymous12 years ago
In some ways cheerleading and marching band are similiar. They have planned routines and they are there for some support are some ways.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I never said I considered cheerleading to be a sport, though. Yea, I consider competitive cheerleading to be a sport, but not high school cheerleading.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I feel like both cheerleading and marching band should only be considered sports if they're competitive. If you're just standing on the sidelines doing toe-touches or kinda-sorta marching at halftime and doing cheers in the stands, that doesn't count. DCI, though? Sport.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Competitive cheerleading is a sport. Not high school cheerleading.
Marching around a field while playing instruments is not a sport.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I wouldn't consider most high school bands to be at the level of many sports. There's plenty of physical exercise and whatnot, but it's not at the same level.
However, drum corps should be considered a sport. Summers spent marching in a drum corps are more intense than most sports.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I've got many friends in the marching band, and they usually have a lot of practise--and often some of the best lungs.
It depends on what instrument you play and what level the band is at, but it's definitely tough enough to be a sport.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I don't know if I'd call marching band a sport, but it is a bit harder than it looks. And agree with the whole competitive cheerleading = sport, high cheerleading=/= sport.
by Anonymous12 years ago
inb4 all the marching band kids ranting about how hard it is to be in a marching band
by Anonymous12 years ago
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sport
thus, I would consider both to be sports
by Anonymous12 years ago
Cheerleading is EXTREMELY physically demanding, so yea it is a sport.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Well if marching bands a sport then so is chess right? I mean it has a team and captain. Then there's the debate team, there are tons of sports. And pokers on espn. I mean that has to be a sport. The tv says so.

Poker is*
by Anonymous12 years ago
Yeah, and if competitive cheerleading is a sport, then I guess so is dancing with the stars, dog shows, america's got talent, and ballet are sports too right???
by Anonymous12 years ago
Absofrickenlutely! And since we're including america's got tallent that means if it requires tallent its a sport. So now we have piano and I'm good at math so can that be a sport?
by Anonymous12 years ago
OF COURSE!
by Anonymous12 years ago
Awesome! I can finally say I'm good at a sport!
by Anonymous12 years ago
My marching band practices more than any other activity/sport at my school. Yes, you can be injured in marching band. Have you ever been hit with a rifle? Or slipped and knocked over a line of people going backwards on a swampy field? It may not be considered a sport, but it'd be cool if people recognized it is physically demanding to move at a jogging pace without moving your upper body at the same time as 60+ other people...while playing an instrument/tossing a flag or rifle. Yes, it's hard. And and think we just deserve the same rights as most sports teams. I mean, a majority of the marching band is in better physical condition than a lot of the golf team. (not dissing golf, just saying we're more in shape than the team at my school). So yeah...
by Anonymous12 years ago
hell to the yeah!
by Anonymous12 years ago
ok, we get it, it's physically demanding. Yes, I agree many people should know how hard it is (like the movie drumline)
But still no sport, because of scoring method (if any).
by Anonymous12 years ago
Yes, I agree that it's not a sport. I just wish the school system would give us the same respect the sports teams get...
by Anonymous12 years ago
Wait till you get to collage. I've heard it's super serious there and they do give you money and respect.
by Anonymous12 years ago
The supreme court actually made a ruling saying that cheerleading is not a sport. Now why they would be debating that and not the budget I don't know
