The difference is in the crease on top of the bread. A bun is smooth on top, a roll has a crease where the dough was 'rolled' by the baker. It's more common to see burgers on onion rolls than onion buns, but burgers are more often served on buns (since the bread is usually made in a factory not by a baker).
If you actually have some then just look at the top, if there is a crease then it's a roll, if not it's a bun.

I've never heard anyone call it a bun. Even at the shop it's ''hamburger roll''.
