+373 The saying "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" didn't work out so well for the Trojans, amirite?

That's where the expression came from, dude.

Actually, this phrase comes from back when horses were commonly given as gifts, and the age of a horse could be determined by the teeth, so if a person looked the gift horse in the mouth, they would be assessing the value, which was considered rude. This is, however, the origin of the phrase "Beware of Greeks bringing gifts."

Yes, it is indeed a cool story.

Really? I was taught in school that the gift horse saying was from the Illiad, using the logic that the Trojans got in a dangeros proximety to th horse, therefore leaving themselves open to attack. I was aware of the Greeks with gifts saying, though.

Hm. It's been years since I read the Iliad, so I don't remember exactly, but I thought they accepted the horse without really any inspection on it, then partied because they thought they'd won the war, and then the Greeks attacked after all the Trojans had all gone to sleep and were therefore defenseless.

Exactly. You're probably right about the saying. I was just explaining my train of thought.
