It turns on and off every few minutes depending on if it's running on gas or battery. Like, it runs on gas while the battery is charging and then it runs on battery until it needs to be charged, then it switches back to gas etc. Proud Prius driver :)

Be a bigger problem with a Tesla, no gasoline engine.
