+270 If the government cared about your health, cigarettes and liquor would be off the shelf, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The government has no right to say what your can and can't consume. It's up to every individual to decide for themselves.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh yeah? They say we can't have drugs...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Only because the people allow them to. I recall there was a vote on legalizing marijuana just a few months ago in California. The only reason it didn't pass was because the majority of people voted no. Either way, I was speaking philosophically. Those kind of matters should always be completely up to the people. The only thing the government has to do is enforce what the citizens say.

Of course you were speaking philosophically :P

That's why school lunches aren't regulated and kids aren't taught to follow the food pyramid in school, even though what they tell us to eat isn't all that healthy.

If we banned cigarrettes and alcohol it would become illegal, and people who are addicted to would become 10 times worse, because they would be breaking the law for something that they crave.

1. the cigarette business is too profitable for the government to outlaw, at least not all in one go (although its getting harder and harder). 2. alcohol is regular amounts is perfectly safe and actually improves health in some doses. 3. It is not really the governments job to force us to do things, even if it would improve our lives, until it reaches the point of endangering other, unwilling, peoples lives.

Who said the government cared about our health? It's no big secret they only care about money.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They also care about their lives.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

if you dont like them. Dont do them, its that simple.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's not a good argument. I can get hurt by second hand smoke, even if I'm not the one doing the smoking.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh that makes sense! So, let's legalize murder! If you dont like murder, don't do it, right?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

now you're just being irrational. Stay logical now.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's what you said...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

but really, murder? That's irrational.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you don't like it... Don't do it...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Murder is a direct assault on another person's life. There's a lot less culpability in making personal choices like smoking and/or drinking.

Assuming you're speaking of the US-- That's not the government's job. If any one of our founding fathers read this, he'd roll in his grave. The job of the government is to protect the rights of the people and NOTHING else. Public drunkenness and smoking in many public places is already illegal. Anything more would be infringing on rights rather than protecting them. I demand the right to make choices--which you may or may not deem poor--on my own behalf.
