What, should they call each individual who knew that person after school and tell them each personally? During school is the best time, because they can't just ignore it, and the whole school should know.

What Nacklefoodle said, and they probably don't want rumors spreading about what happened to them. And they usually have a moment of silence or something to remember the person. I'd be honored if my whole school shut up for a couple seconds to think about me.

I'm not saying they shouldn't let students know, and trust me, in my school, I'd be honored, too. But at the time I wrote this (I totally didn't expect this to be on the main page) they were giving updates like every hour of this girl who had gotten into a car accident. Like "She's in surgery" or "she's not doing so well"...
