Isn't one of the central ideas of Marxism that the working class is going to rise up in a great overthrow of the ruling class? Marxism doesn't seem as relevant today because working conditions are so different from the mid 1800s.

The fundamentals behind it are still sound. It basically advocates overthrowing capitalism as opposed to the ruling class though.

Communism isn't really a bad thing, and neither is capitalism. It's just that neither one can work without a bit of the other's input. A pure communist or a pure capitalist society is just not sustainable.
