+540 It is stupid that people who teach kids everything have one of the lowest salaries and the people who do nothing but entertain us (music and sports) have the largest, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, our taxes pay teachers salaries, and they chose to be a teacher, because I've been told by almost every teacher I've had that they became a teacher to help kids. So, it's not like they were forced. They knew the salary.

well why would anyone play sports or make music for a living if all they got was a teacher's salary? since becomming a teacher isnt nearly as hard, as someone else said, they get a smaller salary than those who work hard to get where they are.

Being a teacher is just as hard. You can't say athletes/musicians don't work as hard as teachers. Teachers don't "deserve" lower salaries because they //don't work as hard//.

Entertainers do not have the largest salaries. Most people who try to become entertainers end up failing and doing something else; the people at the top of the entertainment industry create an illusion. A teacher may not make as much money as Taylor Swift, but a college professor is a lot better off than the freelance bassoon player. It's also not fair to compare teachers and entertainers because entertainers put out a product intended to be bought; teachers provide a service for schools that have them on a salary roll. Consider how much more money a typical undergraduate student spends on college per year versus how much they spend going to concerts or buying CDs.

The teachers in my school that complain about their low salaries have some of the highest salaries in the district. One teacher makes over $100,000 a year, considering 2 months of vacation, breaks, and he only teaches 5 classes a day [totaling about 4 hours], that's a lot. And he's not even a good teacher.

Where do teachers make 100k a year? I know amazing teachers who would kill for half that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yep. 2 gym teachers, married to each other, also make $100,000 a year each. EACH. The union in my district is too strong. We're risking our activities getting cut, and those already overpaid teachers get pay raises every year :/

Wow. That's a bunch of bullshit. The school district I just graduated from was torn between raising teachers pay or buying new stuff for the schools. We definitely didn't have teachers making that much money.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My school is the same. the teachers ...and gym teachers get paid so much it's ridiculous

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's simple economics. People are paid in exchange for their services. Entertainers make a lot of money because they make their employers even more money.

Unfortunately, entertainers teach a lot of kids too.

I feel like teachers who enjoy what they do and are good at their job don't really care about the money. Sure they'd like it, but they're happy just to do what they love. Entertainers on the other hand, need tons of money to create an impact on the audience. They work hard to entertain millions of people worldwide. Unfortunately, this is just how the world works.

Pay isn't based on the importance of a job, it's based on how hard the job is COMPARED TO how many people can do it, and how many people want to do it. Teaching isn't that easy, but TONS of people can do it and WANT to do it and are qualified to do it. If you're a musical person, being an entertainer wouldn't be that hard, but so few people CAN do it, so you have to pay the ones that can lots of money. Unfortunately, it's usually the ones that can't that make it huge...

In our district test scores went way down but salaries went up. The teacher unions are ruining the schools I've been to because there's no motivation for most of my teachers to even try and be a good teacher.

Entertainers and athletes make more money because of one reason. "Those who can do, Those who can't teach."

The average salary for a teacher in Massachusetts (where I live) is somewhere in the 60ks. Not exactly "one of the lowest." Sports players do have to know a lot and be really amazing at it, but a 6th grade math teacher only needs to know 6th grade math.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

sports players only need to know how to play their sport, and be talented at is yes.
