+279 Milk has the amazing ability to cool your mouth down after you eat something really spicy, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This isn't a question people can answer yes or no to. It's a fact. That's why they tell you to drink milk after eating something spicy, or pour it on your eyes if you get pepper sprayed.

It becomes a question when the amirite? Is added to the end. Granted, it wouldn't be a yes or no question otherwise, but it still is one with that phrase attached to it.

I never said it wasn't a question. I was just pointing out that you can't say no to it, because it's a fact, not an opinion, like the questions on this site are supposed to be.

They did that on MythBusters.

Once I drank a bottle of salsa with hot cheetos, and my friend told me to drink milk to calm my tounge down. I don't care how many other people have tried this and succeeded, this is bullshit, and just made me want to barf.

Milk has a high fat content to counteract the spicyness; it's SCIENCE!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The science lied.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

so skim milk wouldn't work?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It would have a lesser effect, most likely.

Milk works well on extinguishing spiciness because it contains a lot of the protein casein, which binds to the capsaicin (chemical causing spiciness) better than capsaicin binding to your taste buds. It's got nothing to do with fat (regardless of what Mythbusters says). However, milk is the SECOND most effective method in cooling your mouth. Oil, like vegetable or olive oil, is the best to counteract spiciness because both capsaicin and oil are hydrophobic hydrocarbons, which allow them to dissolve each other easily and wash it down. I still prefer milk, though, since I wouldn't want to put loads of oil into my mouth after eating spicy foods.

Well mister sun. You're quite the intelligent one.

Drinking water actually makes it worse after you eat something spicy, contrary to what most people believe. Just thought I'd share because it relates so the theme of the post.
