Certian commercials for charities are so dumb, instead of paying for a "hot tv star" use that money for the charity, and instead of paying for the commercial to air which is a lot of money, use it for the charity. amirite?

Some networks actually donate the spot to charities. :)

well the celebrity will usually do it for free, and they make far more money off of donations from the commercial then if they were to just donate that money....

It's an investment, just like other advertisments. They want our money, so they have to get their name out there. We seem to respond to certain ads more than others (celebs). If it cost more than it brings in, I'm sure they wouldn't do it. But like St. Jude's--they get a lot of donations. And the celebs that appear on charity ads often do it for free. Most celebs choose a charity or two to sponser.

They do whatever they know will make a PROFIT to give to the charity.
