+241 Why is "a fish out of water" used to describe discomfort or someone being "out of their element"? A literal fish out of water is flopping around, gasping for breath, and dying. That's a bit more than discomfort, amirite?

Yes poor fish they will die if out of water, people however will usually adapt.
