I think it's all has to do with having other people to compare yourself to. When you're alone, you judge your individual features and how they look arbitrary to yourself, but when you're with others, you start comparing yourself to others.

That makes sense, too. You don't worry about how other people perceive you when no other people are around, I suppose.
