that's not true. if I'm trying to define the word banana I could just hold one up. I don't have to use words.

Except that's not true. Words can be defined by pictures- this is how many people learn to speak as a kid for example "cat" can be defined by a picture of a cat, or "red" can be defined by a red picture

well it's true that nouns and some adjectives CAN be defined by pictures, but the definition of a cat is "feline mammal usually having thick soft fur and no ability to roar: domestic cats; wildcats " and you can't necessarily define all those words with pictures.
