I think most people say that Thumbs (and in some cases, Pinkies) aren't "fingers" because they don't have the word "finger" in their names (For example, Ring Finger, Middle Finger, Index Finger) The reason Pinky is called a finger more often, is because some people call it a Pinky Finger, others just call it the Pinky.
