+126 It's very irritating when people pronounce the silent 's' in "Illinois.", amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't think its supposed to be silent. I think its supposed to be like noize.

I'm from Illinois, and believe me, the s is silent.

Probably I was just going by the way dictionary pronounces it. I say both but usually without the s

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Wait...the dictionary pronounces it that way? *facepalm*

You do know that the dictionary has a pronunciation key that tells you how to pronounce words, right? *facepalm*

I do when I read it in my head... And I've accidentally said it out loud before. Which was super awkward because I live in Illinois.

Worse, I know a kid who swears it's pronounced Jol-et. No...just no...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Jol-et??

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Joliet.

Or when people say Or-gone

The S’s are silent in Illinois & in Des Moines because they are French in origin. In French, a consonant after a vowel is silent.

But the French pronounciation should be Illi-no-ah, not Illi-noy
