There's a huge difference between affect and effect, but no one knows what it is. Amirite?

Affect is a verb and effect is a noun!

I hate it when people don't know the difference! My history teacher NEEDS TO LEARN THE DIFFERENCE!!!

It also goes the other way ("schizophrenic people have a flat affect", meaning the way they respond to situations; "an uprising can effect a change in the social order", meaning cause). But the other ways are rarely used, and mean something entirely different, so in general you're right.

I'll try to explain:
I was affected by my grandmother's death.
My mother's isolation was one of the effects of my grandmother's death.

Effect is due to a consequence of something.
Affect is usually how someone feels.
