In some places, the plain is vanilla, even though I agree that vanilla does have a certain taste, and isn't "plain". Like, I worked in a restaurant once that served milkshakes, and the vanilla one was the default, the chocolate was vanilla + chocolate sauce, the lime was vanilla + lime sauce, etc.
