+280 "if you win a laptop a child in Africa wins a laptop too!" ya Fruit by the Foot because children in Africa really need laptops, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

A child in Africa definitely needs a laptop more than you. Are you aware that Africa is not an empty dryland filled with starving children?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Exactly! Why don't they just give it to a kid in poverty because then they might actually have a purpose for it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i'm pretty sure a lot of ppl would rather have food and water

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ya that's what I'm trying to say! What's the point of having a laptop if you don't have electricity or Internet. They should spend the money from those cheap laptops their trying to award and send them fresh water and food and clothing

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Contrary to popular belief, Africa is not just a rock with undeveloped black people on it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I doubt that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You seem rather ignorant.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Africa is a really big continent, with a lot of fully developed countries. I really hate it when people say this sort of thing, it's just so ignorant. I really, really can't explain how frustrated I am at this post. I mean, what about South Africa? That's developed and pretty much everyone there has laptops and houses and they're normal people, much like everyone else in the world.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There are really great parts of this post, but then really ignorant parts too. This post has really got me befuddled

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I ono at this post. Hard.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

A laptop is really useful for educational purposes. More educated children means more future leaders that can do GOOD for their country.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Honestly what are the African kids going to use the laptop for? are they going to google what clean water and what the opposite of poverty is?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I can imagine a laptop would be pretty useful for school. Lots of organizations are big on getting these kids a decent education so they have promise for their futures. Better education = better job = more $ (well, in a perfect world that is)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, hopefully not to someone in Egypt. You can only play solitaire for so long

by Anonymous 13 years ago

srsly, we got our internet back ages ago ono I don't mind the jokes, but there are still idiots who don't understand IT'S BACK.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm not an idiot, just making jokes man. Internet=serious business

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Wasn't talking about you, I meant the people who'll read that and think it's still true >_> Two dozen people on Amirite have insisted I don't exist because "Egypt doesn't have internet, liar!" The joke's funneh, I'll give you that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

:D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Seriously, why would they? I doubt that websites and stuff can even translate to that clicking language that they all speak over there

by Anonymous 13 years ago

......you're a dumbass. Please educate yourself. For your sake and ours.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What do you mean? I don't get it?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What country are you thinking of when you made that comment (by the way, there are different countries in Africa)? And if you weren't, just name a poor, African country.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Wait, there are different countries in Africa? Since when? I thought it was like Australia how it's a country and a continent at the same time...just with ten times more AIDs

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well I'm like 90% sure you're joking, I sure hope so. But really, back to the original point, depending on the country everyone will speak either English or French. It dates back to when it was colonized. When you're within your village/tribe, yes, you'll speak the local language. But when speaking to someone who doesn't know that language, in cities or most importantly in schools, you speak English or French. It's quite interesting. http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/african_languages.htm

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Simba needs a laptop too.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't get why America is so quick to give stuff to other countries when people here are in need too.. Also, this post is ignorant..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because people in some African countries are in bigger need. Plus it would look bad if they didn't give anything..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(Rebecca.): Do other countries give stuff to African countries??

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well I'm pretty sure that every country in the European Union gives a certain amount of development aid to some projects in the developing countries in Africa. I know my country gives about 0.83% of our GPD to development aid. And then of course most countries has non governmental organisations, which collect and donate money to development countries too.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think what the OP is getting at is, even though there ARE developed countries in Africa with kids who need laptops, it would be much more beneficial if they used that hundreds of dollars that would buy that laptop on food, water, schools, etc. for children in underdeveloped countries in Africa. I think keeping people alive is better than getting someone a computer.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thank you, that is EXACTLY what I am trying to say

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It seems that the OP's point goes like this: if you can't afford a computer, you probably don't have internet access either. Computers are pretty much useless without internet, all you can do is type and play solitaire. They might have educational benefit, but only if you can access the internet. Even if there are some Starbucks or similar places that have wi-fi, I doubt it's as plentiful in Africa as it is here, so if anything the laptop will waste the kid's time walking to the hotspot to get internet. Not to mention that if they're seen carrying it around there's a good chance they'll get robbed. Ultimately, it doesn't do much good. It would be better for them to spend the money on anti-retrovirals, or mosquito nets, or really anything that will make a marked difference in their livelihood.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

They help kids in underdeveloped schools.
