+353 You'd rather have your dad be gay than a polygomist, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

A gay dad would be fabulous.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You're comparing those two like they're bad things.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Being gay isn't wrong at all, but polygamy is just gross.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, it's all a matter of perspective. For example a couple decades ago people would say "Oh being black isn't wrong at all, but being gay is just gross". Also in polygamy-allowing countries they would say "Gross, gays? Polygamy's the way to go."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No.. but it's just like... why can't you just have one wife? Do you really love them all? Are you using them just for sex?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

[butts in] If all partners are aware of and consent to the polygamist relationship, what's the problem? This type of overanalyzing coupled with the idea that it's 'just gross' is the reason why we see homophobia everywhere today.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well in the end none of it matters, who "really" loved whom and who was using whom for sex, they're all just some dumb things people do for pleasure. It harms no one else, so it's not wrong. Dating one person could have the exact same problem: does he love her or is he using her? Polygamy/polyamory is simply one of those pleasures humans made up, which is actually practised by quite a few animals.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't think you can really compare being black to being gay or polygamist. But, as Vitae said, if all people in the relationship are aware of it (this actually sounds more like polyamory) and they're all consenting adults, then there's no real problem.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think you can compare them. It was considered wrong or inferior to be black, so they were treated badly, it was considered wrong or gross to be gay, so they were (still are a bit) treated badly. They're both simply characteristics people are born with.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I guess, but I think skin colour being an obvious physical characteristic, vs sexuality and sexual orientation, aren't good comparisons. I guess since you're examining the prejudice surrounding them, it works that way, but it still feels off to me.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I posted it because I made a polygomy joke to a Mormon friend. He's kind of homophobic (in an, I'm not used to being around gays, way, not a kill the gays, way) so when I made a joke about his dad hypothetically being gay he freaked. I said it was weird that he freaked about this but laughed at the polygomy joke and he said he'd rather have his dad be a polygomist than gay.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well first of all, it's "polygAmy", and therefore "polygamist". And still, in that argument you're comparing those two like it's "Would you rather have no arm or no leg"; still sounds like you're choosing the lesser of evils.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I mostly posted this because I thought it was ridiculous that he'd rather have a polygamist dad, because he'd be an adulterer, especially in the current Mormon church, which doesn't even allow you to remarry if your spouse dies, than a gay one, even if he wasn't actively gay. I thought it was kind of dumb that he'd rather have his dad have multiple wives than be gay, so I posted this. It wasn't really a lesser of two evils thing, more like a "how can you honestly believe this one is better?" thing.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They're both equal to an unbiased eye. For example, I myself don't support any type of marriage, am not against any type of marriage, and have honestly no care for anyone's sexuality. They're both fine, it's just that in your culture it's considered normal to have husband/wife marriages and rarely same-sex marriages as well. Polygamy is some Eastern weird tradition that you've never seen in person so therefore you root for the same-sex side, which is kind of a big deal (recently) in your country/culture. In THEIR cultures gay marriage is still awful and weird just like polygamy is to you. They're both just types of marriage! They're not bad nor good! Just types. That's why I think it's wrong to list either one of the two in a Would-you-rather question.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

To me it was mainly weird because of his religious beliefs. I mean, their church doesn't even allow remairrage after death, and he's saying he'd rather his dad be married several times than be gay, even if he stayed single? If his beliefs were different it wouldn't be so weird.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well I see it's a bit different in your situation, but on this site without all this background info to each voter, it sounds different from what you meant. And yeah, it's kind of weird that he'd choose that...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The Mormon church is against homosexuality too, but you'd think he'd be more concerned with the multiple wives thing considering they stress the importance of marraige and adultery is one of the ten commandments and all.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Hm, in that case it'd be more fair to add "Mormons:" to the post, yeah? Because I'd agree completely if it were completely on the Mormon rules and whatnot, but for people of other religions this post has a completely different side.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I honestly didn't think the post would get that much attention though. I just made it sort of to prove a point, but not really to the amirite community. I just expected it to get a couple votes then ignored. Unfortunately, I forgot that anything even seemingly controversial using the word gay gets homepaged.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

i think its ironic cuz the Mormans believed in Polygamy when they first started out as a religeon

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I know, but now they're extremely against it. The Mormon I know says it was because there were a lot of women and fewer men in the area Mormons lived when the religion was formed. I personally don't believe that's the case because one of their "prophets" at the time declared it was God's will for men to have more than one wife. God's will is different from a numbers game and the Bible actually encouraged being single if you wanted that life, for both woman and men. Now they've changed their ways and are trying to move away from the polygamy stereotype.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

How would you have come into existence if your dad were gay? rape?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

He could have realized it much later in life (happened to a friend of mine), or he could have adopted.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

A surrogate mother.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Like the people above said, he could have been a sperm doner, or used a surrogate mother, or he could have realised he was gay later in life, or he could have married a woman and started a family with her because that was what was expected of men to do a few decades ago.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why? It'd be reassuring to know that one of his wives isn't your biological mother and you could fantasize about them without feeling weird. And hey, you're more likely to get some older tail.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Lol! Like father, like son, eh?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There's nothing wrong with either.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

How is there nothing wrong with having multiple spouses?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

As long as all of the adults are aware there are multiple people involved and consent to it, it's not a big deal.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think it's kind of a big deal. Mainly because of the religious aspect.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I guess, unless you are Mormon or another religion that accepts it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Mormons don't accept it anymore. In fact, they're so strict about marriage, you can't even remarry after your spouse dies.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh, damn!
