It's exactly like that. Comparing words to non-words, saying one over the other is correct. Of course it's correct, the other one's not a real word.

All s/he is commenting on is how people get lazy and start pronouncing it 'laptop'. Labtop is actually pronounced different than Laptop whereas "Boys and girls" and "Boyz and girlz" would be pronounced the exact same. Labtop was just basically OP's way of making it phonetic so people got the drift.
I don't know if I'm explaining this right or just rambling.

Boys I pronounce with an S boyz I pronounce with a z. It's a subtle difference.
