+138 Sometimes it feels like going to school is a selfish act to better ourselves. We spend so much time inside learning, while we could be doing something that helps make the world a better place and makes a difference to someone, amirite?

knowledge is power. you wouldn't know where to start with the environment without school.

read that wrong, not just the environment, but you know.

not just that, but like helping people who need it. helping out people in poverty, stuff that you don't need an education for. but yes i agree with what you're saying, which isn't what i'm arguing

I feel this way all. The. Time. Especially going to a private school...

That's so stupid. Theres not much of a difference you could make in the world when you're lacking in education

I want to become a pharmacist, so after I go to college and do everything I need to, I will be making the world a better place. I'll be dealing drugs. [Legally, of course] There's only so much you can do before you leave school. You can't drive until sophomore/junior year, some volunteer places make it a requirement for you to be 18, and if you go to build a house/teach kids English/etc., you won't know what you're doing. So, yeah.

That's why you study to get a job that helps others.

not to mention that honestly, if we didn't have school, over half of us really wouldn't be doing anything but sleeping anyway.

It's kind of hard to help people if you don't know how to read...

Just because there are people in the world who need help doesn't mean that everything we do for ourselves is selfish. Education isn't a want it's necessary. By this logic it is also extremely selfish to eat food while so many other people in the world are starving. It's nice that you want to help people but your own health comes first.
