an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.)
Last time I checked dancers participated in competitions and it requires skill. :o

Yeah yeah yeah, It's not a sport. Get over it.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Yeah, it is a sport.
by Anonymous14 years ago
No its not.
by Anonymous14 years ago
How come its not showing on my profile? and my pic isnt under it?
by Anonymous14 years ago
Because either you were logged out or you chose to post it anonymously with Chris as an alias.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Thats a bummer, no credit. *Sad face*
by Anonymous14 years ago
It says athletic. All you have to do is shake your ass and it is a dance. That is not athletic at all. While you may call some dance a sport, it is more an expression, which is why dance was invented in the first place.

Ass shaking dancing which is not the type of dancing we are talking about:

by Anonymous14 years ago
Covered that in the latter half of the comment.
by Anonymous14 years ago
I think of dancing as more of an art... Just sayin'.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Agreed.
by Anonymous14 years ago
you are very much mistaken. dancers use every single muscle in our bodies. we have muscles that you probably have never even heard of. it's mentally engaging and physically demanding, the steps we have to do are extremely complex. i would say you should try it for yourself, but most likely you would fail greatly, so just leave the dancing to us real athletes. it's a form of exercise. the sport of dance takes years of training and hard work to perfect. dancing also helps improve football players flexibility. we need strong core muscles, we need to be able to multi-task (kick one leg out, while extending our right hand, point our toes, make a fist with the other hand, stand up straight, smile.....all at the same time) some professional athletes would call dancers the toughest athletes in the world. and if you are truly convinced that dancing isn't a sport still...then maybe you can explain why they are considering adding pole dancing in the Olympics. the Olympics are all about sports.
by Anonymous14 years ago
No, your wrong. Dance isnt a sport. The rest of AIR agrees with me so far
by Anonymous14 years ago
wow....all 10 people agree with you...big whoop.
i guarantee you that the people who do agree with you are most likely too lazy to even get up off their asses to try dancing.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Dancing is a hobby, get over it already. If it were a true american sport it would be on tv for a big event like the superbowl, the worldseries, etc.
by Anonymous14 years ago
It's not on TV because dancing goes beyond the athleticism of sport because of its emotional and artistic intent. you need to realize the level of physical skill required as well as the artistry of a dance. the meaning of the word "sport" is: "an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." by this definition, dance is, indeed, a sport. but this definition ignores the art and self-expression that is portrayed through a dance. not only does it test your endurance but it forces you to use your body as an instrument.

Lacrosse is a sport. You don't see that on TV. Volleyball is a sport, barely anyone watches that on tv. Dancing is a sport, you have competitions, it uses your physical abilities, and it takes skill. By your reasoning, gymastics shouldn't be a sport either, but it is. It's an Olympic event.
by Anonymous14 years ago
You do actually see Lacrosse on tv.
by Anonymous14 years ago
You do see lacross on tv actually. ESPN, its been on the highlights, Volleyball is in the olympics so its obviously worth watching. Dancing is pointless to watch.
by Anonymous14 years ago
"...it would be on tv for a big event like the superbowl, the worldseries, etc." I don't really think lacrosse & volleyball would be seen on big tv events, but that's just me. Dancing isn't pointless to watch, it's a form of entertainment just like football and baseball.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Yes but volleyball is in the olympics, if dancing was thrown into the olympics id consider it a sport.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Can we home page this to see what other people think?
by Anonymous14 years ago
I already did.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Well doesn't someone just have a silver spoon up their ass? You can dance big deal, you aren't better than anybody because of it.
by Anonymous14 years ago
i never said i was better than anybody because i dance. i'm so sorry for offending you while i stick up for what i believe. everyone has a right to their own opinion.
peace & love.
by Anonymous14 years ago
"You would fail miserably" The fact that you said that and the fact that by your name I am guessing that you can dance a little at least, you are implying that you are better than people that can not dance. I don't mind if you stick up for your opinion, just don't play dumb.
by Anonymous14 years ago
No need to be a dick to her. Shes voicing her opinion just like the rest of us.
by Anonymous14 years ago
we have the same muscles as everyone else does, dancers aren't the only people in the world who exercise various parts of their bodies
the olympics adding pole dancing would be the equivalent to thinking curling is anything other than amusing.
dancing takes alot of hard work, but i typically consider team games sports, only an opinion,
thats why masturbation alone isnt a sport, but a circle jerk is, HURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
by Anonymous14 years ago
peace & love.
p.s. let me know if you want me to continue. :]
by Anonymous14 years ago
Ill continute all night.
by Anonymous14 years ago
good, cause i will too.
by Anonymous14 years ago
I view it as both, since I used to take lessons. But, on the sports side, it still takes endurance, flexibility, and strength. Also, it can be competitive. Not to mention some sports have artistic categories for judging, like figure skating and gymnastics.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Its not pointless to watch when they have a whole entire MTV show about it.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Well, it is pretty physically rigorous and is competitive, plus it requires lots of practice, which sounds like pretty much every sport Iv'e heard of, so...
But maybe not in a very technical sense. You don't need balls to play a sport! XD ( every single sport seems to require some sort of ball )
by Anonymous14 years ago
Okay im kind of lost on whos where. so Dancing girl respond to this haha so we can continue this debate. (Im kinda mad that this isnt showing up on my profile that i got something on the home page)
by Anonymous14 years ago
hellooooo. okay, so anyways....where were we?
did you try logging out and signing back in?
by Anonymous14 years ago
I think i submitted it when i was logged out, but ill give it a try.
Anyways. As i was saying, if it was a true legit sport it would have a huge year round competiton that the world could follow like most sports. I agree with you that it does take everything it needs to be a sport but its missing the big part that makes it a legit sport which is publicity
by Anonymous14 years ago
there are dance teams all across the entire world that compete in vigorous competitions.
and those competitions happen to be open to the public.
by Anonymous14 years ago
Um, what about all those TV shows like So You Think You Can Dance, America's Best Dance Crew, Dancing With the Stars, talent shows, et cetera? What about school dance competitions? There are plenty of publicized dance competitions. Maybe not all are as well known as you say they have to be, but who says all sports have to be publicized to be a sport? What about the games of kickball kids play in elementary and middle schools? (I loved those) Just my 2 cents. :D
by Anonymous14 years ago
Ok, the most common point being brought up to say it isn't a sport is that it isn't on tv? That is ridiculous. There are many many dance competitions, it's physically demanding, it requires skill, and is often enjoyed casually by non-professional people. All of these describe a sport, and dancing both. Dancing is most definitely a sport. (note: I don't dance competitively myself, but I know people who do)
by Anonymous14 years ago
Good on you. It's not a sport.
by Anonymous14 years ago
well you can think that. but maybe you should try it first and then make your final decision. trust me, you'll change your mind.
by Anonymous14 years ago
I IMed youu
by Anonymous14 years ago
I get that it is physical, but don't think that it is a sport.
by Anonymous14 years ago
well like i said before, that's your decision. but don't knock it till you try it.
by Anonymous14 years ago
anyone who has done a dance even a few minutes long and not very difficult, will agree that dancing is a sport. after doing that for hours, you will be completely pooped out, and you will be able to eat a horse. it's just an artistic sport
