∅ in Mathematics is indeed one of the symbols for null, but ∅ is a letter in the Norwegian/Danish alphabet. Just because Σ is a Mathematics symbol as well doesn't mean it stops being a letter of the Greek alphabet...

It's also a symbol in chord notation that represents a half diminished chord. Only musicians would know that though...
