+209 A tail is a part of an animal. A detail is a small piece of information. The word retail refers to the direct sale of goods. These words have absolutely nothing in common, amirite?

It seems like detail should mean to take somebody's tail off and retail should mean to put it back on.

What if you're giving a detail about a tail that you're selling in your retail business? Now they have something in common. :D

at a cocktail party? o.O

yes they do. they all end in t-a-i-l.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's the point. Why do they all end in t-a-i-l?

i got that part. i was being sarcastic.

Retail means a sale in small quanities. Details is a small part as a whole. Tail seems to be of an entirely different etymology (the first two French, the latter Middle English, from Old English tægel) so I would expect little difference.
